About the project

Bluescape is a virtual collaboration platform that enables companies to see, share and interact with each other in a lifelike manner. You'll see the value of Bluescape right away with features like whiteboarding, integrated video conferencing, compatibility with existing apps and more. Throughout our multi-year partnership, we collaborated with Bluescape to create and refine innovative features. Additionally, we elevated the product's visual identity by creating a comprehensive design system from the ground up.

Vision and concept development

To evolve Bluescape from a digital whiteboard into a strategic platform for visual decision-making, we worked not only on design, but on the overall direction of the product. Together with Bluescape’s product leadership, we developed concepts for new features, future use cases and how different parts of the platform should work together.

We visualised these ideas through prototypes and scenarios and presented them to leadership, UX, engineering and business stakeholders. Our goal was to create a product that feels intuitive to use, is built to scale and performs in organisations where quality and reliability are essential.

Meet & Collaborate – an example of a feature we helped shape

One of the most complex and exciting areas we worked on was how meetings and collaboration should function inside Bluescape. Not as a separate video call, but as a natural part of the visual workspace.

Bluescape Meet was used for daily standups, small design reviews and large meetings with over 150 participants, which placed completely different demands on how the experience should work. Some of the key challenges we explored were:

How do you design a meeting mode that works just as well for a team of ten as for a global broadcast with hundreds of participants?

How do you combine presentation mode with “follow mode” without participants losing orientation or control?

How do you ensure everyone gets a chance to contribute, for example in a daily standup, without the meeting losing pace?

How do you design breakout sessions so it’s clear where to go, what to do and how to return to the main session?

By combining video, whiteboard, files, navigation and real-time interaction in one place, we helped create an experience where conversation, ideation and decision-making happen in a single flow.

A design system that made Bluescape scalable

When we joined Bluescape, the interface had evolved over time without a clear visual direction. Different parts of the product behaved differently, and the overall look and feel was no longer modern or cohesive. At the same time, new features were being developed in parallel, which sometimes led to different interpretations across teams. To create a more unified product and a more efficient workflow, we developed Bluescape’s first design system – including shared components, visual principles and interaction patterns. This resulted in a consistent user experience, reduced duplication of work, faster development cycles and a shared language between design, product and engineering teams.

From Sketch to Figma and Storybook

When we began collaborating in early 2020, Sketch was still the primary design tool, and the first version of the design system was built there. But the industry evolved quickly, and by early 2022 we transitioned to Figma, enabling real-time collaboration, scalable components and a more efficient workflow.

The new system was built with scalability in mind. Components and design tokens were structured using REMs, adapted for different screen sizes and connected to Storybook to align design and code. This turned the design system into more than a UI library – it became a foundation that allowed Bluescape to evolve faster, more consistently and at greater scale.

Words from the team

❝ Being part of the design vision team was a valuable learning experience. We inspired and guided both the UX team and business leaders towards a unified vision of the product.
